4 Alternative Strategies for Optimizing your Mental Health

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and this year, we had the pleasure of welcoming Melissa Wilson and the FOX26 team to our M-K-T location. For a recap, check out the video feature below, or click here to read the full article.

According to polls, 90% of US adults believe that we are experiencing a mental health crisis. In fact, the CDC reports that during the course of the pandemic, mental health treatment became more common (22% up from 19% in 2019). At Huemn, we know that mental health is a nuanced topic that doesn't get nearly the attention that it deserves. While medications, talk therapy, and modalities like EMDR can be helpful in providing individuals with relief, we also know that our modalities can act as a perfect complement to traditional methods of mental health management. Today, we’re taking a deep dive into 4 alternative strategies that may help manage mental health symptoms, including: Cold Exposure Therapy, Photobiomodulation (Light Therapy), Shift Wave Chair, and The O2 Nano Float Pod.

Huemn on FOX26 Talking Modalities to Help with Mental Health

When you hear the word “biohacking”, what comes to mind? For many, this term signifies almost a Sci-Fi-Esque approach to living far beyond your natural lifespan. What many don’t realize; however, is that biohacking is merely the optimization of your body’s natural systems, so that you are able to increase your healthspan, or the number of years that your health remains in optimal condition. Biohacking doesn’t have to be overly complicated. In fact, some of the best ways to “hack” your biology include a number of small, incremental changes (think: lifestyle, sleep habits, time in nature, behavioral modifications). While technology makes some pretty incredible things possible, when we talk about biohacking, we’re really just talking about ways for you to feel your very best—which includes your mental health. Below, we’re discussing 4 alternative strategies that serve as more of the technological biohacks to combatting anxiety, stress, depression, and even PTSD.

Before we get started, we want to remind you that mental health is an incredibly nuanced topic, and what works well for some may not be right for others. The beauty in the solutions offered at Huemn - Optimization + Longevity is that our modalities are non-invasive, carry no risk of unwanted side effects, and can be used in tandem with traditional therapies.

Cold Exposure Therapy for mental health

Cold Exposure Therapy, such as cold water immersion and Whole Body Cryotherapy, has been associated with various mental health benefits. While the effects can vary among individuals, here are some potential mental health benefits of cold exposure:

  1. Improved mood and alertness: Exposure to cold temperatures has been reported to stimulate the release of endorphins, which are natural mood boosters. Cold exposure can increase alertness, improve focus, and provide a sense of invigoration, helping to combat feelings of lethargy or depression.

  2. Stress reduction: Cold exposure activates the sympathetic nervous system and triggers the release of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. While short-term stress responses are beneficial, they can also help regulate long-term stress. Cold exposure has been found to enhance the body's ability to cope with stress, leading to improved stress resilience over time.

  3. Enhanced resilience and mental toughness: Consistently exposing oneself to uncomfortable or challenging situations, such as cold temperatures, can help develop mental resilience and fortitude. Cold exposure can provide an opportunity to practice mindfulness, breathing techniques, and mental focus, fostering mental toughness and the ability to withstand discomfort.

  4. Increased energy and motivation: Cold exposure can stimulate the release of noradrenaline, a neurotransmitter associated with increased energy and motivation. This can lead to a sense of heightened vitality and an improved ability to tackle tasks or engage in physical activities.

  5. Boosted immune function: Cold exposure has been shown to enhance immune function by increasing the production of white blood cells and activating the body's natural defense mechanisms. A healthier immune system can indirectly contribute to better mental health by reducing the risk of illnesses and infections that may impact mood and overall well-being.

  6. Improved sleep: Cold exposure, particularly when practiced in the evening, may help promote better sleep quality. The drop in core body temperature that occurs after exposure to cold can induce a state of relaxation and facilitate the onset of sleep.

At Huemn, we have a few different options that allow you to get your cold exposure in. First and foremost, Whole Body Cryotherapy, the modality that put us on the map over six years ago. At both Houston-area locations, we offer walk-in, full body Whole Body Cryotherapy chambers that expose you to -150 degree temperatures. To read more about Whole Body Cryotherapy, click here.

We also have a Cold Plunge at our Houston Heights location. Our Cold Plunge is set to a brisk 37 degrees, and involves immersing your body into our cold tub for anywhere from 3-5 minutes. You’ll leave feeling invigorated, mentally resilient, and ready to take on whatever stressors life throws at you. For more on Cold Plunge at Huemn, click here.

Photobiomodulation

Photobiomodulation (PBM), also known as low-level light therapy or red light/infrared therapy, involves the use of specific wavelengths of light to stimulate cellular function and promote various full body benefits. While the research on PBM and mental health is still emerging, some potential mental health benefits have been suggested. Here are a few:

  1. Mood enhancement: PBM has been shown to have mood-enhancing effects. It can stimulate the release of endorphins and increase the production of serotonin, which are neurotransmitters associated with positive mood and well-being. PBM may help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety, and promote a more positive emotional state.

  2. Reduced symptoms of depression: Preliminary studies suggest that PBM may have antidepressant effects. It has been found to modulate brain activity and increase neuroplasticity, potentially leading to improvements in depressive symptoms. PBM may be used as an adjunctive therapy for depression, but further research is needed to establish its efficacy.

  3. Cognitive enhancement: PBM has shown promise in enhancing cognitive function. It may improve attention, memory, and overall cognitive performance. PBM's ability to increase blood flow and oxygenation to the brain, promote neurogenesis (formation of new brain cells), and reduce inflammation may contribute to its cognitive benefits.

  4. Reduced anxiety and stress: PBM has demonstrated anxiolytic effects in some studies. It may help reduce symptoms of anxiety and stress by modulating the activity of the amygdala (the brain region involved in the stress response) and regulating stress hormone levels. PBM may promote relaxation and a sense of calm.

  5. Improved sleep: PBM has been investigated for its potential to improve sleep quality. It may regulate circadian rhythms and melatonin production, promoting better sleep patterns. By reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, PBM may also address underlying factors that can interfere with sleep.

At Huemn, we have two innovative options for those looking to get their Light Therapy in. First, we have our full body Photobiomodulation Bed. “The Bed”, as it is lovingly referred to, is the most powerful Photobiomodulation device on the market, and has a myriad of health benefits. To learn more about our PBM Bed, click here.

We also offer a more localized Light Therapy option, the LED Helmet. This provides all of the benefits of Photobiomodulation that you know and love, but it directs the therapy to the brain. This helmet is an innovative way to target brain health, inflammation, cognitive decline, and even hair loss.

Shift Wave Chair

The Shift Wave Chair (formerly known as the Slow Wave) has become one of our most popular services for stress relief, anxiety, and PTSD. The Shift Wave may look like any other chair, but this zero gravity recliner has built-in vibrational plates that apply pulsed pressure waves to the body, which not only rebalances the nervous system, but also increases the flow of blood, lymphatic fluid, and cerebrospinal fluid.

The Shift Wave has a myriad of programs (at Huemn, we call them ‘Journeys’ that are expertly designed with specific goals in mind (ie: stress relief, mental readiness, recovery, etc). Extensive studies have been performed on the Shift Wave, and major educational institutions continue to study its positive effects on mental health conditions like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. In fact, the makers of Shift Wave took this innovative chair to relief sites for fleeing Ukrainian refugees.

Some of the findings that are applicable to mental health include:

For Stress Relief: A study at Tulane Medical School showed a 28% reduction in anxiety and 41% reduction in stress in just 15 minutes, accompanied by autonomic and brain network shifts.

For Sleep Improvement: Synthetic Sleep™ journeys mimic physiologic and neurologic aspects of deep sleep, including enhanced cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage in the glymphatic system.

Whether you're looking to level up your concentration or performance, reduce stress levels, combat anxiety before it escalates, or sleep better at night, the Shift Wave is hands down, one of the most powerful ways to reset your nervous system. At Huemn, we offer Shift Wave sessions as part of our recovery memberships, but also offer them a la carte. To learn more, click here.

The O2 Nano Float Pod

The O2 Nano Float Pod is what we like to call the Ultimate Biohacking Stack, as it combines four of the most cutting-edge biohacks into one innovative modality: Float Therapy, Red Light Therapy, Hydrogen Gas Inhalation, and O2 Nanobubbles. For the purpose of this blog, we’re going to highlight Float Therapy, as its extensive stress relief benefits are well documented and can be a huge benefit to mental health outcomes.

Float Therapy, also known as floatation therapy or sensory deprivation therapy, is a relaxation technique that involves floating in a tank or pool filled with water. Typically, Float Therapy takes place in water with a high salt concentration; however, the Nano Pod at Huemn takes a different approach to floating. Our Nano Float Pod is 94 degrees, and due to the oxygen nanobubbles, you’ll be twice as buoyant. This takes the concept of Float Therapy to the next level, because you’ll reap the meditative and relaxing benefits of floating, while also being exposed to three other powerful healing modalities. The benefits of Float Therapy include:

  1. Stress reduction and relaxation: The sensory deprivation environment of float therapy can help induce deep relaxation and reduce stress. The absence of external stimuli, such as light, sound, and gravity, promotes a calm and tranquil state, allowing the mind and body to unwind. The relaxation response elicited during float therapy can help alleviate symptoms of anxiety and tension.

  2. Improved mental clarity and focus: Float therapy provides a unique opportunity for introspection and enhanced mental clarity. With the external distractions minimized, individuals may experience increased focus, concentration, and problem-solving abilities. The meditative-like state achieved during float therapy can facilitate insights, creativity, and improved mental functioning.

  3. Pain relief and muscle relaxation: The buoyancy created by the O2 Nanobubbles in the float pod reduces the effects of gravity and relieves pressure on joints and muscles. This can help alleviate physical discomfort and promote muscle relaxation. By reducing physical pain and tension, float therapy can indirectly improve mental well-being and contribute to a sense of overall calmness.

  4. Enhanced sleep quality: Float therapy has been reported to improve sleep quality and reduce insomnia symptoms. The deep relaxation and stress reduction experienced during floatation can have a positive impact on sleep patterns.

  5. Emotional and psychological exploration: The sensory-reduced environment of float therapy can create a safe space for emotional exploration and introspection. It allows individuals to disconnect from external influences and engage in self-reflection, introspection, and processing of emotions. Float therapy may facilitate mindfulness practices and promote a greater understanding of one's thoughts, feelings, and inner experiences.

At Huemn, we are the only location in the United States with the O2 Nano Float Pod. It can currently be booked at our Houston Heights location. To learn more about this modality, click here.
